Lefkada is an Ionian Sea island in western Greece, part of the Ionian Islands region and known for its dramatic coastal cliffs and well-regarded beaches. The island has a long history of settlement and a modern tourist infrastructure concentrated around its main town and coastal resorts.

Famous beaches and bays dominate the island’s appeal. The west coast features cliff-ringed sands with vivid turquoise water at spots such as Porto Katsiki and Egremni, while the larger, more accessible beaches like Kathisma attract day visitors. The southern village bays and Vasiliki Bay are important for water sports - Vasiliki is a regular base for windsurfing and kiteboarding.

Historically the island has been inhabited since antiquity and has passed through Venetian, Ottoman and modern Greek administrations; it became part of the modern Greek state along with the other Ionian islands in the 19th century. The town of Lefkada contains the island’s main port, older neighbourhoods and defensive works from different periods.

Geographically Lefkada lies just off Greece’s western mainland, separated by a narrow channel and connected by a causeway and movable bridge. The island sits roughly west of the regional mainland coast and is the northernmost of the main Ionian tourist islands near the gulf of the Ambracian Sea.

  • Connection: Linked to mainland Greece by a short causeway and a movable bridge at the island's main town, allowing road access without a ferry.
  • Wind and beach conditions: Best wind-surface conditions are typically in summer months; the sheltered bays on the south and east are calmer for swimming and family beaches.

What to See #

  • Lefkada town: The island's principal town and port with the main ferry connections and a historic centre built around the harbour; local shops and ferry/boat services depart from here.
  • Vasiliki: A bay on the island's west coast known for strong thermal winds that make it one of Greece's leading windsurfing and kitesurfing centres.
  • Porto Katsiki: Steep-cliffed sandy beach on the southwestern coast noted for dramatic turquoise water and white cliffs; reached via a steep path down from the coastal road.
  • Kathisma: Long sandy beach with easy road access and facilities, popular for swimming and sunsets on the island's west coast.

  • Head inland to mountain villages such as Karya or the Dimosari Gorge near Nidri for cooler air, local food, and hiking routes that most day-trippers miss.
