Main image

Lee Valley Regional Park is a long, linear regional park in eastern England that follows the River Lee for roughly 26 miles and covers around 10,000 acres. It is managed by the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority created in the late 1960s.

Facilities and landscapes are spread along its length and include riverside paths for walking and cycling, a chain of reservoirs and wetlands, and multiple sports and leisure centres offering water sports, athletics and golf. The park is used for day trips, extended rides and wildlife watching across suburban, rural and urban sections.

The corridor was developed in the 20th century and formalised under regional planning arrangements in the 1960s to provide a continuous recreational green space through Hertfordshire, Essex and northeast London. Since then the authority has added facilities and managed conservation areas along the valley.

The park stretches from Ware in Hertfordshire through parts of Essex and northeast London to the River Thames at East India Dock. London is the nearest major city and many sections are accessed from suburban towns and commuter rail stations.

  • Scale: The park runs roughly 26 miles (about 43 km) from Ware in Hertfordshire to the River Thames at East India Dock and covers around 10,000 acres (about 4,000 hectares).
  • Management: Managed by the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, the park is designed as a continuous green corridor for recreation across county boundaries.
