Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape

The Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape is a large, planned landscape in South Moravia shaped by the Liechtenstein family and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It combines castles, parks, water features and architectural follies across a designed rural estate.

Two principal centres, Lednice Castle and Valtice Chateau, are linked by parkland, avenues, ponds and ornamental structures such as the Lednice minaret. The ensemble contains formal gardens, arboreta and recreational routes that together form a designed parkland used for walking, cycling and cultural visits.

Developed over several centuries by the Liechtenstein family, the area was reshaped in the 18th and 19th centuries into an English-style landscape with neo-Gothic and classical architecture. The estate reflects successive phases of garden design and aristocratic patronage.

Situated in the South Moravian Region, the landscape is centered on the villages of Lednice and Valtice and lies in the agricultural plain south of Brno. It is accessible by regional roads and local rail services.

• Best way to explore: The landscape is best explored by bike or on foot trails that link parks, ponds and follies across the estate.
• Interior access: Timetabled guided tours are often required to enter principal interiors, especially at Lednice Castle and Valtice Chateau.

• Lednice Castle: Lednice Castle is a neo-Gothic chateau set within landscaped parks and water features and is the most visited core building in the ensemble.
• Valtice Chateau: Valtice Chateau is an aristocratic residence with baroque and classical interiors that formed the administrative centre of the designed estate.
• Minaret (Lednice): The Lednice minaret is a 19th-century folly rising to roughly 60 metres and serving as a panoramic tower within the park landscape.
