Lednice Castle
Castle Neo-Gothic chateau within extensive landscaped gardens
In South Moravia, Lednice Castle sits within the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape (UNESCO); visitors tour neo-Gothic interiors, landscaped gardens, greenhouses and the castle’s parkland.
Lednice Castle is a prominent chateau in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic and a central element of the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape. The site is known for its 19th-century remodelling and extensive landscaped park.
Visitors explore ornate interior rooms, formal and English-style landscape gardens, water features and several park follies including a greenhouse and a minaret. The estate covers a large designed landscape with avenues, ponds and woodland that link Lednice with nearby Valtice.
The medieval origin site was acquired and transformed over centuries by the Liechtenstein family, with major rebuilding and Romantic-era redesign occurring in the 19th century to create the present chateau and park ensemble.
The chateau and grounds lie in southern Moravia close to the village of Lednice and near the town of Valtice, within a landscape of vineyards and agricultural land.
- UNESCO listing: Inscribed as part of the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996.
What to See #
- Lednice Chateau: The main chateau is a neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance palace remodeled in the 19th century by the Liechtenstein family to serve as their summer residence, with ornate state rooms and façades facing the park.
- Palm House (Greenhouse): A large 19th-century greenhouse (often called the Palm House) sits within the chateau grounds and contains tropical and subtropical plant collections in a glazed structure that dates to the 19th century.
- Park minaret: A decorative late-18th/19th-century minaret folly rises within the landscaped park and was built as a garden feature rather than as a religious structure.
