Le Moustier
Archaeological Site Prehistoric archaeological site notable for Mousterian remains
Near Les Eyzies in Dordogne, Le Moustier is a prehistoric rock shelter where Mousterian tools and a Neanderthal skeleton were found; archaeologists and history-minded visitors tour the site and nearby caverns.
Le Moustier is a Paleolithic rock shelter and archaeological site in the Vézère valley of Dordogne, southwestern France, and is the type-site of the Mousterian stone tool industry.
The site is primarily of interest for its exposed shelter and the archaeological remains recovered there, including Mousterian flaked stone assemblages and human fossils associated with Neanderthals. Interpretive panels at the site and displays in regional prehistoric museums present the excavated layers and tool types.
First excavated in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the site produced key finds that defined the Mousterian technocomplex. Excavations revealed multiple occupation layers used by Middle Paleolithic hunter-gatherers and contributed to understanding Neanderthal anatomy and behaviour.
Situated in the Vézère valley in the Dordogne department, Le Moustier lies close to the village of Peyzac-le-Moustier and the larger prehistoric centre at Les Eyzies. The site is within a landscape dense with other Paleolithic rock shelters and caves.
- Archaeological significance: Type-site for the Mousterian stone tool industry and important for studies of Middle Paleolithic Neanderthal occupation.
- Stratigraphy and age: Visible stratified deposits and exposed shelter faces give an indication of repeated occupation phases spanning roughly 160,000 to 40,000 years ago.
Tips for Visiting Le Moustier #
- Visit early in the morning (before the larger day-tour groups from Les Eyzies arrive) to enjoy the quiet viewing area and interpretive panels beside the shelter without crowds.
- Combine the short stop at the fenced rock-shelter with a visit to the nearby Musée national de Préhistoire in Les Eyzies to put the Le Moustier finds in context - many visitors see only the exposed site.
- Respect preservation rules: the shelter area is protected and access is limited; view from designated paths and panels rather than attempting to enter or touch exposed deposits.
- Check opening/access information before you go - Le Moustier is an outdoor archaeological site with limited facilities and seasonal access variations, so confirming current visitor access avoids wasted travel.
Best Time to Visit Le Moustier #
Best visited late spring through early autumn when the weather is mild and access to the outdoor archaeological site is easiest.
