Laxminarayan Temple, commonly known as Birla Mandir, is a large Hindu temple complex in New Delhi’s central area, built by the Birla family and inaugurated in 1939. It is a prominent 20th-century temple in the city and a focal point for worship and public ceremonies.

The complex contains the principal Laxminarayan shrine dedicated to Vishnu and Lakshmi along with subsidiary shrines, marble-clad halls and carved stonework. The temple grounds include gardens and open plazas that accommodate visitors and festival gatherings.

Construction was undertaken by the industrialist Birla family in the 1930s and the temple was formally opened in 1939; it has since served as an active place of worship and a venue for religious festivals in Delhi. The site has been maintained by the Birla Trust and associated custodians since its founding.

The temple is located in central New Delhi close to Connaught Place and accessible by road and public transport. It sits within the city rather than on a remote pilgrimage route, making it a common stop for both worshippers and visitors to central Delhi.

What to See#

• Main sanctum: The main sanctum houses the Laxminarayan shrine dedicated to Vishnu with adjacent shrines to other deities within the same complex.
• Grounds and plazas: Gardens and approach plazas surround the temple complex and accommodate large congregations during festivals and public ceremonies.

From Connaught Place or Khan Market, walk or take a short taxi ride to Mandir Marg; the nearest metro station is Barakhamba Road (Purple Line) about 1.5 km away or Rajiv Chowk (Yellow/Blue Lines) about 2 km. Auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws ply the surrounding streets-ask to be dropped at the Mandir Marg entrance to avoid the busiest corners.

Parking is limited on-site; arriving by metro plus a short walk or autorickshaw is usually faster than driving.

• Visit early morning after the first aarti for cleaner light and fewer crowds-photographs of the white sandstone are best before the sun hits the façade.
• Enter from Mandir Marg to avoid the heavier traffic and taxis near Gole Market; the smaller side-entrances are less crowded.
• Observe temple etiquette-remove shoes, dress modestly, and keep phones quiet during prayer. The priests are usually willing to answer questions about rituals if approached respectfully.
