Lava Beds National Monument
Park Volcanic landscape with lava tubes and Native rock art
Rugged lava flows, dozens of accessible lava tubes and Modoc War sites define this high-desert park; visitors explore caves with headlamps, hike volcanic terrain and study rock art and battlefield remnants tied to Native American history.
Lava Beds National Monument in northeastern California protects a volcanic landscape of lava flows, cinder cones and hundreds of lava tube caves. The area is also significant for its cultural history, including battle sites from the Modoc War.
The landscape was formed by basaltic eruptions over tens of thousands of years; in the 19th century the area became a theater of conflict during the Modoc War, with the stronghold used by Modoc fighters. Archaeological evidence and rock art attest to much earlier Native American presence.
The monument lies in Modoc County in northeastern California near the towns of Tulelake and Klamath Falls (Oregon is nearby), in a sparsely settled volcanic plateau region.
- Cave count: The monument contains more than 700 lava tube caves and extensive lava flows, making it one of the most cave-dense volcanic areas in the continental United States.
- Historical sites: It preserves significant historic sites from the Modoc War, including defensive positions used in 1872-73, alongside volcanic geology and Native American rock art panels in some areas.
What to See #
- Captain Jack's Stronghold: Captain Jack's Stronghold, a rocky complex used by Modoc fighters during the 1872-73 Modoc War, with narrow lava ridges and protected alcoves that provided defensive positions.
- Schonchin Butte: Schonchin Butte, a volcanic cinder cone with a restored fire lookout tower that provides panoramic views across the lava bed landscape and is accessible by trail from the visitor center area.
- Lava tube caves: A wide array of lava tube caves and collapse features that visitors can explore - many caves are short, well-marked passages while others require helmets and lights for safe entry.

Tips for Visiting Lava Beds National Monument #
- Start at the free Lava Beds Visitor Center near Tulelake - it's the information hub for cave conditions, maps and ranger‑led cave tours, and will point you to quieter lava tube entrances.
- Go early or late in the day to avoid the heat and mid‑day coach groups; caves are much more pleasant and less crowded outside the late morning peak.
- Bring a reliable light and a warm layer - most lava tubes are unlit and temperatures inside stay cool; check park alerts because some caves close seasonally to protect bats.
- If you want to avoid the busiest caves, ask rangers for lesser‑visited tubes or routes on the park map - there are dozens of caves, and many visitors concentrate on the same handful.
