Lausanne Cathedral

Lausanne Cathedral is a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Lausanne, canton of Vaud, built mainly in the 12th and 13th centuries. It is one of the largest and most important medieval churches in Switzerland and serves as the seat of the local diocese.

The interior features a high nave, Gothic vaulting and historic stained glass; the west front and main portal are notable elements of the exterior. A public viewing platform in the cathedral tower offers wide views over the city and toward Lake Geneva, which is a frequent draw for visitors.

Construction took place across the 12th and 13th centuries; the building has undergone restorations and repairs in later centuries to preserve its Gothic fabric. Over time the cathedral has remained the city’s principal medieval church and diocesan seat.

The cathedral stands on a prominent hill in central Lausanne, within walking distance of the old town and the Lausanne railway station. It overlooks the city and is a short walk from other central landmarks and pedestrian streets.
