Laugharne Castle

Laugharne Castle is a ruined medieval stronghold in the town of Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, Wales, with origins in the Norman period of the 12th century. It occupies a prominent headland above the tidal estuary of the River Taf.

The site presents a partly ruined stone keep, curtain walls and vaulted rooms that can be explored on foot along defined paths. Views from the castle look over the estuary and surrounding marshes, and the nearby town and Dylan Thomas Boathouse are frequently visited together with the castle.

Founded by Norman builders in the 12th century, the castle was strengthened and altered through the medieval and post-medieval periods with additions to domestic ranges and defensive walls. Over time it fell into ruin and is now managed as a ruin open to the public with conservation interventions.

The castle sits on a rocky promontory on the estuary of the River Taf immediately adjacent to the historic town of Laugharne in Carmarthenshire. The site is accessible from the town centre by a short walk.
