Lastovo
Island Dalmatian island with secluded coves and nature
Lastovo island in southern Croatia forms part of Lastovo Islands Nature Park and features stone villages, secluded bays and sailing routes; visitors come for diving, private coves and traditional island festivals.
Lastovo is an island in the Adriatic Sea off Croatia’s southern Dalmatian coast, noted for its traditional stone-built villages and relatively undeveloped landscape. The island and nearby islets form part of a protected archipelago valued for marine and natural conservation.
The principal settlement, Lastovo town, features a medieval street layout, historic churches and defensive towers; the island’s vernacular architecture and local festivals are cultural highlights. Visitors also use the island as a base for sailing, diving and quiet coastal exploration in clear Adriatic waters.
Lastovo has a long habitation history and has been influenced by Venetian and later Dalmatian maritime cultures; traditional ways of life persist alongside seasonal tourism. Conservation designations have aimed to balance visitor use with protection of marine and terrestrial habitats.
Geographically the island lies in the southern part of the Croatian Adriatic within Dubrovnik-Neretva County, west of the Pelješac peninsula and among other small island groups in the region.
- Architecture: The island is known for traditional chimneys and vernacular stone architecture that characterises the main settlement.
- Protected archipelago: Much of the surrounding archipelago is protected, offering clear waters for sailing and diving and a low-density tourism experience.
What to See #
- Town of Lastovo: The town of Lastovo retains a compact medieval core with stone houses, defensive towers and a main square; it is the island's cultural centre and ferry port.
- Lastovo Archipelago Nature Park: The surrounding Lastovo Archipelago is protected as a nature park, comprising numerous small islands and marine areas used for sailing and diving.
How to Get to Lastovo #
Lastovo island is reached by ferry or passenger catamaran from the Croatian mainland and larger islands (services are seasonal). Jadrolinija and other local ferry operators run scheduled services to the port of Ubli (Lastovo) from ports such as Split or via intermediary island links; from Ubli harbour the main village and island roads are a short walk or a few minutes’ drive.
Tips for Visiting Lastovo #
- Book ferry crossings to Lastovo's main port (Ubli) in advance during summer - the island's car ferry and passenger services fill up on Saturdays and during July-August peak season.
- Arrive early in the day or stay overnight: day-trippers arrive by ferry and boat charters in late morning, so morning and late-afternoon windows are noticeably quieter for beaches and village streets.
- Rent a scooter or small car to explore inland tracks and secluded bays; many visitors concentrate on Lastovo Town or Skrivena Luka and miss the remote coves and traditional stone villages inland within the Lastovo Islands Nature Park.
Best Time to Visit Lastovo #
Go in summer for beaches and island life, or in shoulder seasons for milder weather and fewer crowds.
