Larsa is an ancient Sumerian city-state and archaeological site in southern Mesopotamia, located in what is now Dhi Qar Governorate in Iraq. It was one of several independent city-states that played a role in the political landscape of southern Mesopotamia in the early 2nd millennium BCE.
The site consists of a tell containing remains of temples, city walls and administrative buildings typical of Mesopotamian urban centres. Today it is primarily of interest to archaeologists and scholars of ancient Mesopotamian history rather than general tourism.
Larsa rose to political prominence during the Old Babylonian period under rulers such as Rim-Sin I and was eventually brought under Babylonian control during the expansion of Hammurabi in the early 2nd millennium BCE. Its history spans the Early Dynastic, Old Babylonian and later Mesopotamian periods.
The ruins lie in the southern Mesopotamian plain of modern-day Iraq, in Dhi Qar Governorate. The site is situated inland from the Persian Gulf within the alluvial plain that hosted many of ancient Mesopotamias principal cities.
