The Laponian Area in northern Sweden is a large cultural and natural landscape that combines mountain, forest and tundra habitats with long-standing Sámi reindeer-herding practices. It is recognised for both outstanding natural features and continuing indigenous land use.

Visitors encounter expansive mountain ranges, river valleys and remote wilderness areas used seasonally for reindeer grazing and associated Sámi activities. The combination of untouched natural scenery and a living pastoral culture is central to the area’s importance.

The Laponian Area reflects centuries of Sámi land use and adaptation to arctic and subarctic environments, with reindeer herding and seasonal mobility shaping settlement and resource use. Conservation measures have been applied to protect ecosystems and to allow continuity of traditional practices.

The property lies in Swedish Lapland in the country’s far north, spanning mountain and valley landscapes within Norrbotten County and located well north of Sweden’s major southern cities.

  • Sámi reindeer herding: The area is a living cultural landscape where Sámi reindeer herding persists alongside protected mountain and valley ecosystems, so seasonal movement and local land use remain visible.

Tips for Visiting Laponian Area #

  • Aim for early morning or late evening in summer for the best light and far fewer day visitors; day-trippers concentrate on mid-day so dawn/dusk give quieter hiking and better photography of mountains and lakes.
  • Use the established entry points and communities-Kvikkjokk, Ritsem and Jokkmokk are the practical gateways with visitor services and transport links-plan routes from them rather than attempting to drive deep into the protected core.
  • If you plan to enter Sarek or other strict wilderness zones, treat them as unmarked backcountry: there are few trails or services, navigation can be hard and hiring a local guide or joining an outfitted trip is the safer option.
  • Balance nature visits with Sami cultural stops in towns such as Jokkmokk to understand reindeer husbandry and local traditions; the area's major seasonal events (like the Jokkmokk winter market) are very busy, so visit outside those dates for a quieter cultural experience.
