Laodicea on the Lycus

Laodicea on the Lycus is an ancient Hellenistic and Roman city site in western Turkey near modern Denizli, notable for its substantial archaeological remains and its historical importance in antiquity.

Surviving ruins include a large theatre, a stadium, a colonnaded agora and public baths, reflecting the city’s wealth and urban scale under Roman rule. Excavated streets, monumental buildings and tombs are principal features for visitors.

The city was founded in the Hellenistic period, expanded under Roman and Byzantine rule and was an important commercial and banking center in late antiquity; it later declined after earthquakes and changing economic patterns.

The ruins lie in Denizli Province in western Turkey on the Lycus river plain, in the broader region near Pamukkale and the modern city of Denizli.
