Langøya is a large island in Nordland county, Norway, forming part of the Vesterålen archipelago. It is one of the main inhabited islands in the group and features a mix of sheltered fjords, rocky coastlines and low mountains.

Coastal villages and fishing settlements around the island provide bases for angling, birdwatching, hiking and sea kayaking; seasonal tourist services operate from local towns. Roads connect parts of the island to the wider Vesterålen network.

The island’s landscape is the product of glacial carving and coastal processes and has been inhabited for centuries by fishing and farming communities. The modern settlement pattern centers on a few small towns and dispersed rural dwellings.

Langøya sits in northern Norway within the Vesterålen chain, north of the Lofoten islands and above the Arctic Circle, surrounded by the Norwegian Sea and protected fjords.

  • Archipelago location: Part of the Vesterålen archipelago and north of the Arctic Circle, offering coastal scenery, birdlife and sea-based recreation.

How to Get to Langøya #

Langøya (Vesterålen, Nordland) is part of the Vesterålen road network and is reached by car via the main regional roads and bridges that connect the islands to each other and to Sortland and Stokmarknes. Regional buses run between Vesterålen towns; ferries also link nearby islands in the archipelago. Once on Langøya, towns such as Myre and Stokmarknes provide short local drives or walks to beaches and trailheads.

Tips for Visiting Langøya #

  • Plan a summer visit for long daylight, hiking and boat trips; ferries and local services run more reliably from late spring to early autumn, while winter access can be limited by weather.
  • Use Sortland or Myre as practical bases-both are the region's larger towns with ferry/road connections and supplies-then explore Langøya by car or local buses to reach quieter coastal spots.
  • Head for lesser‑visited headlands and small fishing villages away from the main towns early or late in the day to avoid the brief peaks of tourist traffic and to see seabird colonies and tidal scenery with fewer people.
