Langtang Lirung
Mountain Highest peak of Langtang Himal, glaciated Himalayan summit
Langtang Lirung anchors the Langtang range north of Kathmandu; trekkers approach through Langtang National Park for steep ridges, glaciers, Himalayan vistas and access to alpine villages.
Langtang Lirung is a principal peak in Nepal’s Langtang Himal within Langtang National Park and stands above the Langtang valley system north of Kathmandu. The massif is a dominant landmark for trekkers and climbers in this portion of the Himalaya.
From valley viewpoints and mountain villages such as Kyanjin Gompa, the mountain provides a dramatic backdrop and is a focal point for trekking itineraries. The area is popular for multi-day treks that pass through alpine meadows, moraines and glacial terrain, with lodges and teahouses serving visitors on established routes.
The peak and surrounding ridges are products of Himalayan uplift and glaciation; the Langtang area has long been used by local communities for grazing and seasonal use, and mountaineering expeditions have climbed the massif over the 20th and 21st centuries. The valley and its villages were affected by the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, which altered infrastructure and led to rebuilding in parts of the region.
The mountain sits in Bagmati Province in north-central Nepal within Langtang National Park, roughly north of Kathmandu. Treks approach from trailheads on the park’s southern edge and follow the Langtang valley northward into higher alpine terrain.
