Main image

Landscape Arch is a thin, extended natural sandstone arch in Arches National Park, eastern Utah, notable for its very long span. It is among the longest natural rock arches in the world.

Formed by natural erosion of Entrada Sandstone, the arch underwent notable rockfall events in the late 20th century that removed portions of the underside and prompted the National Park Service to restrict access beneath the span. These events illustrate the ongoing natural processes that shape the feature.

Located inside Arches National Park near Moab in eastern Utah, the arch is accessed from the park’s Devils Garden trailhead along the park road.

  • Span: Span measures about 290 feet (approximately 88 meters), making it one of the longest natural rock arches in the world.
  • Access and safety: Located on the Devils Garden Trail and reachable by a short, well-marked walk from the park trailhead; access beyond the viewpoint is restricted for safety following historic rockfalls.

  • Landscape Arch viewpoint: The main viewpoint and short unpaved path that brings visitors to the base of the arch; park signage restricts crossing under the arch due to past rockfalls.

Tips for Visiting Landscape Arch #

  • Arrive at first light - the low sun scours the red Navajo sandstone and the morning air is cool; later the arch is framed by noisy family groups.
  • The official trail to the arch is an easy 1.6-mile (2.6 km) round trip from Devils Garden Trailhead; do not attempt to walk underneath - the area beyond the viewpoint has been closed since major rockfalls.
  • Bring a wide-angle lens; the arch's slender span reads differently from every angle - the best photographic vantage is from the east side where the opening sits against sky.
  • Carry layers: desert mornings can be chilly even when the day warms into the 80s F. There is no shade on parts of the trail.
