Lampsacus
Archaeological Site Ancient Anatolian city on the Hellespont strait
An ancient city site on the Asian shore of the Dardanelles in Çanakkale Province; visitors explore archaeological remains, a hilltop acropolis and the maritime views that shaped its Greek and Roman past.
Lampsacus (ancient Lampsakos) was an ancient Greek city on the eastern shore of the Hellespont (the Dardanelles) in what is now Çanakkale Province, Turkey. It was historically notable as a Greek colonial settlement on a major sea route between the Aegean and the Black Sea.
Archaeological remains relate to the classical and Hellenistic periods and reflect the city’s role in regional trade and maritime traffic across the strait. Remains and finds from the site testify to long-term habitation and its strategic coastal position.
The city was established in the Archaic/Classical Greek period and later came under Persian, then Hellenistic and Roman influence as control over the Hellespont changed. Over centuries the urban fabric shifted with successive regimes and coastal trade patterns.
The ancient site lies near the modern town of Lapseki on the Asian side of the Dardanelles, facing the European shore across the strait and set in a narrow coastal plain.
