Lalu Island

Lalu Island is a small island in the centre of Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan, notable as the lake’s visual and cultural focal point. It is closely associated with the indigenous Thao people.

The island is most often appreciated from boats and from viewpoints on the lake shore rather than as a long on-island visit; many lake cruise routes pass close by and it is a frequent photographic subject at sunrise and sunset. Multiple piers and lakeside promenades around Sun Moon Lake provide uninterrupted views of the island from different angles.

The site has longstanding cultural importance for the Thao community and is protected as part of the Sun Moon Lake landscape. It has been managed within the lake’s tourism and conservation framework to balance visitor access with cultural preservation.

The island sits in Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County, central Taiwan, at the heart of the lake near the lake’s main visitor piers and town of Yuchi.
