Lalitagiri

Lalitagiri is an ancient Buddhist monastery and stupa complex in Jajpur district, Odisha, India, notable as one of the region’s principal early Buddhist sites. It is an archaeological site with visible stupas, monastery remains and a small museum area.

The site is centred on a large hemispherical stupa and a surrounding monastic layout that visitors can walk around. Excavated areas show foundations, platforms and smaller votive stupas; several stone sculptures and Buddha images are displayed on-site. The location is visited for its archaeological remains and for study of Buddhist architecture and sculpture rather than for large-scale facilities.

Lalitagiri grew as a Buddhist monastic centre during the early historic and medieval periods and was used as a religious and monastic site for an extended period. Archaeological recovery has revealed sculpture fragments, reliquary material and structural remains that document phases of construction and use over many centuries.

The complex sits on a low ridge in Jajpur district, Odisha, about 120 km northeast of Bhubaneswar by road. The surrounding landscape is rural with paddy fields and small hills; the nearest sizeable town is Jajpur Road (approximate driving distance under 30 km).
