Lakes of Ounianga
Nature Reserve Saharan freshwater lake system in Chad, UNESCO site
Cluster of Saharan oases and permanent lakes in northeastern Chad, fed by ancient groundwater; a UNESCO World Heritage site visited for unusual hydrology and desert-scape photography.
The Lakes of Ounianga are a group of permanent lakes in northeastern Chad within the Sahara Desert, formed and maintained by ancient groundwater and local geomorphology. The system includes two main groups of lakes and is internationally noted for its unusual persistence and contrasting lake colors.
The lakes exhibit a range of salinities and colours and are surrounded by sand dunes and rock outcrops; they form an isolated wetland complex that supports local biodiversity and has attracted scientific study. Tourists and researchers visit for the stark desert-lake scenery and for study of desert hydrology.
The lake groups formed through long-term climatic and hydrological processes that preserved groundwater-fed basins after regional aridification. Their persistence over millennia and distinct ecology led to inscription as a World Heritage Site.
The Ounianga lakes lie in northern Chad’s desert, in a remote setting of dunes and rocky plateaus; access requires overland travel from regional towns and is typically arranged through guided excursions.
- Hydrology: The lakes are sustained by a fossil groundwater system and have persisted in the Sahara for thousands of years, creating a rare permanent freshwater and saline lake complex in an extremely arid region.
- UNESCO status: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their outstanding natural and hydrological significance and for illustrating long-term survival of aquatic systems in arid climates.
What to See #
- Ounianga Kebir: Ounianga Kebir is the larger group of lakes that includes some of the biggest water bodies in the system, lying in an old depression ringed by dunes.
- Ounianga Serir: Ounianga Serir is the smaller nearby cluster of lakes famous for its vivid colours and stark desert setting.
How to Get to Lakes of Ounianga #
The Lakes of Ounianga are in a very remote part of northern Chad; there are no regular international connections to the site. Most visitors first fly into N’Djamena (international airport) and then arrange a domestic charter flight or an organized multi‑day 4x4 overland expedition with a local tour operator to reach the Ounianga Kebir/Serir area. Travel overland is across desert tracks and requires an experienced driver, permits and supplies.
Plan to coordinate transport and accommodations with a specialist operator in Chad - once you reach the villages around the lakes, sites are reached on short drives or walks from local guesthouses.
Tips for Visiting Lakes of Ounianga #
- Visit in the cooler light of early morning or late afternoon - temperatures drop and the colour contrasts between the deep blue/green lakes and the surrounding red sands are strongest for photography at those times.
- Use Ounianga Kebir village as your staging point: most tours and local guides start there, and staying overnight in the village lets you catch sunrise and sunset light over the lakes when day visitors have left.
- Don't confine yourself to the main Kebir group - the smaller Sérir lakes to the south are quieter and show very different shorelines and colours, so ask your guide to include them if possible.
- Plan a local guide and 4x4 transfer rather than attempting independent travel: routes between lake groups are across soft desert tracks and guides know the best viewpoints and current access conditions.
Best Time to Visit Lakes of Ounianga #
Best visited in the cool, dry months (roughly November-February) when temperatures are milder and desert travel is easier.
