Lake Winnebago
Lake Large Wisconsin lake known for fishing and ice shanties
Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago is the state’s largest inland lake; boaters and anglers target walleye and sturgeon, while winter ice fishing and local festivals bring crowds.
Lake Winnebago is a large inland lake in east-central Wisconsin and is the state’s largest inland lake by surface area. It forms a central part of the local waterway network and regional recreation.
The lake occupies a depression left by glacial activity during the last Ice Age and has long been important to the region for transport, fishing and settlement. Towns developed on its shores and the lake has been managed in coordination with the Fox River and connected waterways.
Situated in east-central Wisconsin, the lake lies between the cities of Oshkosh on its western shore and Fond du Lac at its southern end, with other communities such as Neenah and Menasha nearby.
- Shoreline towns: Oshkosh lies on the western shore and Fond du Lac sits at the southern end, making the lake a regional hub for boating and shoreline communities.
- Sturgeon spearing: Hosts an annual winter sturgeon spearing season that draws anglers across Wisconsin and beyond.
How to Get to Lake Winnebago #
Lake Winnebago sits between the cities of Oshkosh (north shore) and Fond du Lac (south shore). By car use I‑41/US‑41 to reach Oshkosh or US‑151 to reach Fond du Lac, then follow local roads to waterfront parks and boat launches. Several state highways and county roads run to public access points around the lake.
There is local bus service within Oshkosh and Fond du Lac to their downtowns; from those town centers the lakefront parks and boat ramps are typically a short walk or a few minutes’ drive. (Routes and stops vary by city.)
Tips for Visiting Lake Winnebago #
- Visit early in the morning on weekdays for calmer water, fewer pleasure boats and better fishing conditions; late afternoons can be windy and choppy because the lake is relatively shallow.
- Use public access points in Oshkosh, Fond du Lac and nearby state/ county parks (for example High Cliff State Park on the northeast shore) as convenient launch or picnic spots and for good shoreline viewpoints.
- If you're there in late winter, be aware of the traditional sturgeon-spearing season on Lake Winnebago (a major, regulated local event) and check local regulations and safety notices before going out on the ice.
- Avoid holiday weekends in summer around the most popular towns - midweek visits or exploring lesser-known shoreline roads will give you quieter fishing spots and birdwatching opportunities.
Best Time to Visit Lake Winnebago #
Late spring through early fall is best for boating and fishing; winter can work for ice activities but only if ice conditions are confirmed safe.
