Lake Villarrica
Lake Scenic lake at Villarrica volcano, popular recreation
A glacial lake in Araucanía framed by Volcán Villarrica and lakeside towns. Travelers come for kayaking, trout fishing, mountain trails, nearby hot springs and ski options on volcanic slopes around Pucón and Villarrica.
Lake Villarrica (Lago Villarrica) is a freshwater lake in Chile’s Araucanía Region, set at the foot of an active stratovolcano. It is a regional tourism hub noted for combining lake recreation with mountain and volcano scenery.
Beaches, swimming, kayaking and sport fishing are common on the lake, while the nearby towns offer boat tours, thermal springs and mountain guiding. The setting is dominated by the steep cone of the adjacent Villarrica Volcano, which is a focal point for sightseeing and guided climbs.
The lake occupies a volcanic and glacial basin shaped by past eruptions and ice action; human settlement around its shores developed in the 19th and 20th centuries into the present-day towns and tourist infrastructure.
The lake sits in the southern Andes of Chile, between the towns of Pucón on the south shore and Villarrica on the west shore, in a landscape of forested slopes and volcanic peaks.
- Activities: Known for a mix of lake recreation and mountain adventure activities, with water sports on the lake and skiing, climbing and volcano excursions nearby.
- Access points: Two principal towns on the shores provide most visitor services and entry points for guided excursions and boat trips.
What to See #
- Pucón: The town on the lake's southern shore that is the main tourist base for outdoor activities, with shops, guides and accommodation for skiing, trekking and water sports.
- Villarrica (town): A smaller town on the western shore that serves as a local service centre and ferry/boat access point to the lake.
- Villarrica Volcano: An active stratovolcano adjacent to the lake whose slopes and crater dominate the skyline and are a major visual landmark for the area.
How to Get to Lake Villarrica #
Lake Villarrica lies in Chile’s Araucanía Region beside the towns of Villarrica and Pucón. Pucón’s town centre and main lakeside beaches are only a few minutes’ walk from the central bus stops and piazza (typically 5-15 minutes on foot). By road the lake area is reached from the regional capital Temuco via the Pan-American Route (Ruta 5) and the connecting roads to Pucón - the drive is about 80 km (roughly 1-1.5 hours) depending on route and traffic.
Tips for Visiting Lake Villarrica #
- Go early in the morning from Pucón or Villarrica town to catch the clearest views of Volcán Villarrica before winds pick up and generate waves or low cloud.
- Use the main Pucón lakefront as your entrance - that lakeside promenade and public car parks put you within easy walking distance of boat rentals, viewpoints and beaches.
- Consider a short licensed boat trip for different perspectives of the volcano and shoreline, and always check local volcano and weather advisories before heading out onto the water.
