Lake Viljandi is a small lake situated in the town of Viljandi in southern Estonia. The lake forms the historic centrepiece of the town and is overlooked by the ruins of a 13th-century castle.
The lakeshore is used for walking, local events and seasonal bathing, with promenades and parks providing easy public access. The castle hill and ruins on the northern shore are a primary vantage point for views across the water.
The lake basin is the result of glacial and post-glacial processes; the castle and town developed on the lake’s edge during the medieval period and the shoreline has since been managed for urban recreation.
