Lake Tuz
Lake Huge shallow saline lake in central Turkey, seasonal
Central Turkey’s Lake Tuz is a shallow saline basin with seasonal salt crusts and flamingo populations; visitors go for birdwatching, salt flats and broad, flat landscapes.
Lake Tuz (Tuz Gölü) is a large, shallow saline lake in central Turkey, occupying parts of Ankara, Konya and Aksaray provinces. The lake is characterized by high salinity, seasonal water variation and extensive salt flats.
Visitors note the wide white salt surfaces when water levels fall and the shallow pink-tinged lagoons that can attract flamingos and other waterbirds seasonally. Salt extraction is a long-standing local activity and the lake is an important regional ecological site.
The lake sits on the Anatolian plateau and is accessible by road from surrounding provincial centres; conditions vary greatly by season due to rainfall and evaporation.
- Salinity and shallow basin: The lake is a shallow, highly saline basin in central Anatolia and is one of Turkey's largest inland salt lakes, with seasonal water levels that expose salt flats.
- Birdlife: The area is an important habitat for migratory and breeding waterbirds, including flamingos during seasons when shallow waters are present.
How to Get to Lake Tuz #
Lake Tuz (Tuz Gölü) lies in central Anatolia roughly southeast of Ankara. The easiest way to reach it is by car from Ankara - expect roughly a 1.5-2 hour drive (around 140-160 km) depending on your exact destination on the salt lake; follow the main highways south toward Aksaray and then local roads to the lake shore. There is limited public transport directly to the lake; most visitors take a rental car or organized day tour from Ankara or nearby towns and walk a short distance from the roadside parking to the lakeshore.
Tips for Visiting Lake Tuz #
- Visit at sunrise or sunset for the strongest colours and the best mirror-like reflections on the flats; midday light is harsh and the salt crust details are less dramatic for photos.
- Approach from the paved northern shore roads (Ankara/Şereflikoçhisar side) where parking and viewpoints are easiest - the lake is vast and the main roadside pull-offs are the usual starting points for short walks onto stable salt crust.
- Look for stretches of exposed pinkish salt in summer (caused by algae) rather than just the central wet areas - these coloured patches and the patterns in the crust are what many visitors miss when they only stop at the roadside.
