Lake Tōya
Lake Circular caldera lake with nearby active volcanoes, scenic park
In Shikotsu-Toya National Park, Lake Tōya sits in a volcanic caldera; visitors stay in Toyako Onsen for hot springs, hike Mount Usu and take boat cruises for lake and crater views.
Lake Tōya is a volcanic caldera lake in southwestern Hokkaido, Japan, within Shikotsu-Toya National Park. The lake contains several wooded islets known collectively as Nakajima and is surrounded by volcanic peaks and hot-spring resorts.
Boat services and lakeside promenades provide access to the Nakajima islets, and the lakeshore town Toyako Onsen offers hotels and public baths. Panoramic viewpoints around the rim of the caldera give wide views of the circular lake basin.
The lake occupies a volcanic caldera formed by past eruptions; the adjacent volcanic complex includes Mount Usu, which produced a significant eruption in 2000, and Showa-shinzan, a lava dome that grew in the 1940s. These features illustrate the area’s active volcanic history.
Lake Tōya sits on Hokkaido about 100 km southwest of Sapporo and is a major natural attraction within Shikotsu-Toya National Park, set in hilly terrain with numerous hot springs and volcano observation points.
