Lake Tōya is a volcanic caldera lake in southwestern Hokkaido, Japan, within Shikotsu-Toya National Park. The lake contains several wooded islets known collectively as Nakajima and is surrounded by volcanic peaks and hot-spring resorts.

Boat services and lakeside promenades provide access to the Nakajima islets, and the lakeshore town Toyako Onsen offers hotels and public baths. Panoramic viewpoints around the rim of the caldera give wide views of the circular lake basin.

The lake occupies a volcanic caldera formed by past eruptions; the adjacent volcanic complex includes Mount Usu, which produced a significant eruption in 2000, and Showa-shinzan, a lava dome that grew in the 1940s. These features illustrate the area’s active volcanic history.

Lake Tōya sits on Hokkaido about 100 km southwest of Sapporo and is a major natural attraction within Shikotsu-Toya National Park, set in hilly terrain with numerous hot springs and volcano observation points.

  • Protected area: A caldera lake within Shikotsu-Toya National Park that contains the Nakajima islands and is overlooked by active volcanic cones on its southern shore.
  • Volcanic activity: Mount Usu produced a notable eruption in 2000; Showa-shinzan is a lava dome that formed during an earlier eruption in the 1940s.

What to See #

  • Nakajima islands: A cluster of wooded islets in the lake's centre that are reached by tourist boat services in summer.
  • Toyako Onsen: A hot-spring resort town on the lake shore that provides hotels, baths and access to lakeside walks and boat tours.
  • Mount Usu and Showa-shinzan: A volcanic peak and the nearby lava dome Showa-shinzan that lie on the lake's southern shore and are part of the area's active volcanic complex.
