Lake Teletskoye

Lake Teletskoye is a large mountain lake in the Altai Republic of southern Siberia, set within steep forested slopes and alpine valleys. Stretching about 78 kilometres in length and reaching maximum depths of around 325 metres, it is one of the region’s principal natural landmarks and part of the Golden Mountains of Altai UNESCO World Heritage area.

The lake is popular for boat excursions, fisheries and hiking in the surrounding mountains; settlements such as Iogach (north) and Artybash (south) provide the main access points, accommodation and services. The shoreline includes beaches, cliffs and river inlets that feed the lake.

Teletskoye’s basin preserves diverse flora and fauna and is important for regional conservation and ecological research. The area has long been inhabited by indigenous Altai peoples and later used for forestry and small-scale tourism.

Geographically the lake lies in the Altai Mountains of the Altai Republic, southern Siberia, and is reachable by road from regional towns and by scheduled and charter boat services on the lake.

What to See #

• Iogach: A small settlement at the northern end of the lake that serves as a gateway for boat trips and hiking trails into the surrounding mountains.
