Lake Tele

Lake Tele is a shallow, remote lake located in the Likouala Department of the Republic of the Congo, within the central African swamp-forest zone. It is notable for its isolation within the Congo Basin wetlands.

The lake and surrounding peat-swamp forest are of interest primarily to researchers, birdwatchers and adventurous ecotourists; there is little in the way of developed tourist infrastructure. Access is typically by river or bush tracks and can be very limited outside local use.

The area has been used by local forest peoples for fishing, hunting and gathering for generations. In recent decades the lake has also attracted explorers and cryptozoological interest because of persistent local stories about large unknown animals.

Lake Tele sits in northern Congo’s Likouala region amid extensive swamp forest and river channels; the nearest towns are small and access often requires river transport.
