Lake Tanganyika is a large rift-valley freshwater lake in East Africa, with its southern end lying in northern Zambia. It is one of the world’s most important freshwater bodies for size, depth and biodiversity.

The lake is famed for its length and depth - about 673 km long and with a maximum depth of roughly 1,470 m - and for its high level of endemic freshwater biodiversity. People visit for fishing, boat travel between lakeside towns, snorkeling and scuba diving to see endemic cichlids, and lakeside markets and ports.

Formed by rifting in the East African Rift, the lake is one of the world’s oldest freshwater lakes and has supported human settlement and fishing communities for millennia. Its shoreline and use have long been shared across the four bordering countries, and it remains an important transport corridor and fishery.

Geographically it lies along the western arm of the East African Rift, with shores in Tanzania to the east, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, Burundi to the north and Zambia at the southern end. The Zambian access point is near the town of Mpulungu at the lake’s southern tip.

  • International borders: Shared by four countries - Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Zambia - with long international shores and ferry connections.
  • Size and depth: Extremely deep and long - about 673 km in length with a maximum depth of roughly 1,470 m, making it the world's longest freshwater lake and the second-deepest after Lake Baikal.

What to See #

  • Mpulungu: Zambian port town at the southern tip of the lake that serves as the country's main gateway for boat transport, fishing and tourism access to the lake.
  • Kigoma: Tanzanian regional port on the eastern shore and a common base for safaris and boat excursions into the lake.
  • Bujumbura: Major city on the northern shore in Burundi and a historical commercial centre on the lake.
  • Uvira: Town on the western shore in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that is a local transport and market centre on the lake.
