Lake Superior
Lake World's largest freshwater lake by surface area
Lake Superior’s vast freshwater offers long rocky shores, provincial parks such as Pukaskwa, and cold-water fishing. Tourists come for canoeing, boating, lighthouses, and remote hiking along Ontario’s north shore.
Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake on Earth by surface area and is shared between Canada (Ontario) and the United States. It forms the northernmost of the Great Lakes system and holds a vast volume of cold, low-nutrient water.
Shorelines range from low, forested beaches to dramatic rocky cliffs and headlands; notable protected areas include Isle Royale National Park (U.S.) and Pukaskwa National Park (Canada). The lake supports commercial shipping, sport fishing and a boating culture centred on long crossings between ports and island anchorages.
Islands such as Isle Royale and features like the Sleeping Giant on Ontario’s north shore are major natural attractions, with opportunities for multi-day paddling, backcountry camping and wildlife observation.
Lake Superior and its shores were shaped by Pleistocene glaciation, and the lake has been central to Indigenous transportation networks, later European fur-trade routes and modern commercial navigation across the Great Lakes.
The lake lies between Ontario to the north and the U.S. states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan to the west and south; major ports on both Canadian and U.S. shores provide access for visitors and shipping.
- Size: It is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, shared between Canada and the United States.
- When to visit: Summer months (July-September) offer the most favourable conditions for boating, fishing and island-hopping; weather can change rapidly on the lake.
What to See #
- Isle Royale National Park: A large protected island park in the western lake area notable for wilderness camping, moose and wolf populations, and maritime routes.
- Pukaskwa National Park: A protected stretch of the Canadian north shore with rugged rock outcrops, boreal forest and visitor facilities oriented to canoeing and hiking.
How to Get to Lake Superior #
Lake Superior’s northern Ontario shore is reached by road via the Trans‑Canada Highway (Highway 17); the city of Thunder Bay sits on the lake and provides the most convenient regional hub. From Thunder Bay you can reach Lake Superior waterfront parks and lookouts within a few kilometres by car, local roads and short walks.
Tips for Visiting Lake Superior #
- Base yourself in Ontario gateways such as Thunder Bay or Sault Ste. Marie to access Lake Superior's parks; Sleeping Giant Provincial Park (near Thunder Bay) and Pukaskwa National Park (east shore) offer quieter, rugged shoreline experiences.
- Avoid peak summer weekends by exploring midweek and early mornings on popular trails and coastal lookouts; smaller towns like Marathon provide calmer beach access and easier parking than major tourist hubs.
- Book park campsites and backcountry permits in advance for summer travel and check park advisories and weather forecasts-conditions on Superior can change quickly and services are limited along remote stretches.
Best Time to Visit Lake Superior #
Best visited in summer for boating and lakeside activities; late spring and early autumn are good for fewer crowds and scenic travel.
