Lake Sterzh is a natural lake in Tver Oblast, Russia, and is part of the chain of lakes through which the Volga River flows in its upper reaches. It is the first lake in the Upper Volga lacustrine cascade and receives the early Volga headwaters.
The lake has an elongated shape and supports local fishing and small-boat navigation in season. Its shores include rural settlements and forested areas characteristic of the region.
Sterzh was formed by glacial processes and has long been integrated into inland water routes and local economies. Over time the lake’s use has remained largely for fishing, transport and recreation rather than major industrial development.
Geographically it lies in eastern Tver Oblast in the upper Volga basin, within the forested landscape of the Russian plain.
