Lake Starnberg (Starnberger See) is a large freshwater lake in Upper Bavaria, southwest of Munich, historically and recreationally important for the region. It is a popular destination for boating, swimming and lakeside promenades.

The lake has been a recreational destination for Munich residents since the 19th century and gained additional historical note after the 1886 drowning of King Ludwig II, whose death is associated with the lake. Over time the lakeside towns developed promenades, villas and transport links to Munich.

The lake lies in Bavaria a short drive southwest of Munich, with towns such as Starnberg and Tutzing located on the shore; surrounding terrain is a mix of pastoral low hills, wooded slopes and settled lakeside land.

  • Ludwig II connection: The lake is closely associated with the 19th-century death of King Ludwig II, whose body was recovered from the lake near Berg in 1886, a historical point of interest for many visitors.
  • Access and amenities: Regular boat services and lakeside promenades provide access to views, and towns around the shore such as Starnberg and Tutzing offer ferry links and visitor amenities.

Local buses and walking paths connect lakeside towns and boat landings along the shore.

Tips for Visiting Lake Starnberg #

  • Take a scheduled passenger boat from Starnberg for a scenic perspective of the lake and to reach Roseninsel (the Rose Island) when it's open-check the Bavarian Seenschifffahrt timetable as services are seasonal.
  • Explore smaller lakeside towns such as Berg and Possenhofen rather than just Starnberg's main promenade; visiting during a weekday or early morning avoids the busiest weekend crowds.
