Lake Snagov

Lake Snagov is a freshwater lake in Ilfov County, Romania, located north of Bucharest and noted for an island that hosts a medieval monastery. It is one of the better-known lakes in the area around the capital and is frequented for short recreational trips from nearby settlements.

The lake’s primary attraction is the island monastery, which visitors reach by boat; it is the focal point for short excursions, photography, and local pilgrimage. Shoreline paths, reedbeds and small marinas provide places for short walks and boat departures.

The island monastery dates to the medieval period and is associated in local tradition with Vlad Țepeș. The site has been maintained and repaired at various times; the island church and remaining monastic buildings reflect multiple phases of repair rather than a single preserved medieval complex.

Lake Snagov lies roughly 40 km north of central Bucharest near the village of Snagov, set in low-lying plains with mixed reed and woodland shoreline. The lake is accessed from roads that serve the surrounding villages and local marinas.
