Lake Shinji is a shallow, brackish lagoon in Shimane Prefecture in western Japan, adjacent to the city of Matsue. It is an important local feature for fisheries, birdlife and scenic views, especially at sunset.

The lakeshore offers promenades, fishing ports and small ports where local seafood is landed, and there are lakeside parks and viewing areas in Matsue. The lake is also known locally for seasonal bird migrations and for dishes made with the lake’s catch.

The lake sits immediately south of Matsue city and is separated from the Sea of Japan by a narrow coastal zone; the surrounding landscape is low-lying with urban and rural elements and transport access from Matsue is straightforward.

  • Brackish lagoon: The lake is brackish and connected to the Sea of Japan through tidal channels, making it important for fisheries and migratory birds; Matsue city lies on its northern shore and provides viewing points and access.
