Lake Segozero is a freshwater lake in the Republic of Karelia in northwestern Russia. It is set within the heavily forested lake district that characterises Karelia and includes numerous islands and indented shoreline.
The lake is used locally for fishing, small-boat navigation and seasonal recreation; surrounding forests and waterways form part of regional outdoor activity networks. Settlements on or near the lake are generally small and rural.
The lake is part of Karelia’s dense network of lakes and rivers created by glacial and post-glacial processes and has long been integrated into local transport and subsistence patterns.
Located in the Republic of Karelia, the lake lies north of St. Petersburg and is surrounded by boreal forest and a landscape of lakes and rivers.
