Lake Retba
Spa Pink-hued saline lake influenced by algae and salt harvesting
Lake Retba north of Dakar turns pink in the dry season from Dunaliella salina algae; visitors see salt collectors, take boat rides and photograph the shallow, high‑salinity waters.
Lake Retba, commonly known as Lac Rose, is a shallow saline lake northeast of Dakar noted for its seasonal pink colour produced by halophilic algae and high salinity. The lake is a working salt pan and a well-known local natural landmark.
Large salt flats and piles of harvested salt are visible around the shoreline, and small boats are used to collect and transport salt. The lake’s colour varies with salinity and sunlight and can appear strikingly pink under favourable conditions.
Historically the lake has long been used for salt extraction and has become a popular short-day excursion from Dakar for visitors wanting to see the unique landscape and local salt-working activity.
Geographically the lake lies near the Cap-Vert peninsula to the northeast of Dakar and is part of the coastal lowlands of the Dakar region.
- Pink colour: The lake's pink colour is caused by halophile algae that intensify under high salinity and strong sunlight, so the hue is most vivid in the drier, sunnier months.
- Salt harvesting: Active salt harvesting is visible on the lake shores; local salt workers collect and pile salt on the shallows for transport to market.
How to Get to Lake Retba #
Lake Retba (Lac Rose) is on the Cap-Vert peninsula northeast of Dakar. From Dakar many visitors take a shared taxi (known locally as a “sept-place”) or a private car along the coastal roads out of the city toward Rufisque and the Lac Rose turn-off; driving time is roughly under an hour from central Dakar (about 30-35 km by road). There are also organized day tours and minibuses that depart Dakar’s main transport hubs; if you arrive by public transit you will normally be dropped within a short walk of the lakeshore (walking distances vary by drop-off point).
Tips for Visiting Lake Retba #
- Visit on a bright, sunny day in the dry season (roughly November-June) and go in the morning when the pink hue from the microalgae is most vivid and the light is best for photos.
- Arrive before the peak of day-trip traffic from Dakar to avoid crowds and the midday heat; early arrivals also get better access to the salt-collection zones.
- Take a short guided pirogue or shore-side visit to see salt harvesters at work-these human-scale operations and the salt mounds are the most interesting scenes many visitors miss, and a local guide can explain harvesting techniques and where to float safely in the very salty water.
