Lake Ranco
Lake Glacial lake in southern Chile with island features
Framed by Andean foothills, Lake Ranco in Los Ríos invites trout fishing, kayaking and lakeside relaxation from small towns that cater to outdoor visitors.
Lake Ranco is a glacially formed lake in southern Chile’s Los Ríos Region, located within the Andean foothills. It is a regional freshwater lake used for fishing, boating and lakeside recreation.
The lake’s shoreline hosts several small towns and rural settlements that serve visitors and local tourism, with routes into surrounding forests, hills and hot springs. Its waters and nearby rivers support local aquaculture and outdoor recreation rather than large-scale urban development.
The lake basin was carved by glacial action during the last ice ages and later settled by indigenous Mapuche communities and, from the 19th century, by Chilean and European settlers who developed agriculture and towns along the shore. Modern access and recreational use increased in the 20th century with road improvements and tourist services.
Geographically the lake lies in the Andean foothills of southern Chile, with forested slopes, river inflows and a rural landscape; the nearest larger towns are within tens of kilometres and the regional capital Valdivia is the main urban centre for the wider area.
- Towns: Shoreline towns such as Lago Ranco and Futrono provide accommodation and ferry or boat access for lake activities and access into Andean foothills.
