Lake Polyfyto
Lake Reservoir on Aliakmonas River formed by Polyfyto Dam
Polyfyto is a Western Macedonia reservoir formed by the Polyfyto Dam; visitors encounter waterside roads, fishing spots and wide valley views across the Aliakmon basin.
Lake Polyfyto is an artificial reservoir in Western Macedonia in northern Greece, formed by the construction of a dam on the Aliakmon River. It functions primarily for hydroelectric generation and river flow regulation and created extensive shoreline where the flooded valley now lies.
The reservoir is visited mainly by local communities for fishing and limited recreational use; roads and small settlements lie along parts of the flooded valley. The dam and reservoir altered riverine landscapes and local land use when the impoundment was created.
Located in the regional unit of Western Macedonia, the reservoir lies inland in a broadly mountainous, river-valley landscape and serves as an infrastructural feature of northern Greece’s energy and water management.
- Uses and access: The reservoir is an important local hydroelectric basin and also supports limited fisheries and shoreline roads used by local communities.
What to See #
- Polyfyto Dam: The dam on the Aliakmon River that created the reservoir is the main structural feature and supports hydroelectric generation and water regulation for the region.
