Lake Pepin
Lake Natural lake formed by Mississippi River widening, Wisconsin
Where the Mississippi widens between Minnesota and Wisconsin, Lake Pepin features river bluffs, paddleboarding, boating and lakeside towns such as Lake City and Red Wing with marinas and summer events.
Lake Pepin is a naturally occurring widening of the Mississippi River forming a lake on the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin. It was formed when sediment deposited by the Chippewa River backed up the Mississippi, creating a broad, slow-moving waterbody about 21 miles long.
The lake is used extensively for boating, sailing and sport fishing, particularly for walleye and bass, and is fringed by historic river towns such as Lake City, Wabasha and Pepin. Scenic bluffs and shoreline vistas along the lake are popular targets for photographers and day visitors.
Lake Pepin developed during the post-glacial period when meltwater and sediment reworked river channels and floodplains; it has long been important for navigation on the Mississippi River and for local transport and commerce.
Geographically it lies on the Mississippi River between southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, with multiple state highways and small towns providing access to the shoreline.
- Size and formation: About 21 miles long, it is the largest natural lake on the Mississippi River and widens where the Chippewa River enters the Mississippi.
- Visitor highlights: Scenic riverbluffs and small river towns along the shore make it popular for boating, fishing and riverside sightseeing.
