Lake of Banyoles

Lake of Banyoles (Estany de Banyoles) is the largest natural lake in Catalonia, located beside the town of Banyoles in northeastern Spain. It is the region’s primary freshwater lake and has been used for international rowing events.

The lake is a focus for rowing and water sports, with an established regatta course and clubs staging events year-round; its calm waters and long straight stretches make it suitable for competitive rowing. A paved promenade and walking trails circle the lake and link to birdwatching points and small picnic areas.

Formed by karstic spring and groundwater processes, the lake has a long natural and human history and was adapted in the 20th century to host competitive rowing. Its role as the rowing venue for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics is a defining modern use.

Lying immediately adjacent to the town of Banyoles in the Pla de l’Estany comarca, the lake is about 12 km north of the city of Girona in Catalonia.
