Lake Mistassini

Lake Mistassini is the largest natural lake in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is a major freshwater body in central-northern Quebec and an important site for Indigenous communities.

The lake offers extensive shoreline for fishing, canoeing and wilderness recreation, with several sheltered bays and islands used as campsites. Local Cree communities on the lake provide limited visitor services and cultural access points for guided fishing and boat trips.

The lake and its basin have long been used by Cree peoples for fishing, hunting and transportation. European fur trade and later mapping and resource-use activities reached the area in the 18th and 19th centuries, but the lake has remained a center for local Indigenous livelihoods.

Lake Mistassini sits in central-northern Quebec within the province’s boreal zone; the Cree community of Mistissini lies on its shore. The lake is remote from major urban centers and is accessed by regional roads and by air services to nearby communities.
