Main image

Lake Mendota is a freshwater lake immediately north of downtown Madison in Wisconsin, United States, and is closely associated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. It is the uppermost and one of the larger lakes in the interconnected Yahara chain that defines much of central Madison’s waterfront.

The lake is heavily used for boating, sailing, rowing and seasonal ice activities; public parks and campus facilities provide popular viewing and launch points. Notable shoreline features include Picnic Point and the Memorial Union Terrace, both widely visited for lake views.

Historically the lake has been central to local settlement and to the university community, serving recreation, transportation in earlier periods, and ecological functions. Management focuses on water quality, shoreline access and balancing recreational uses.

Geographically the lake sits at the northern edge of downtown Madison in south-central Wisconsin, with the city and university campus along its southern shore and other Yahara lakes connected by short river channels.

  • Recreation: A center for sailing, rowing and ice activities depending on season, with well-used public access points and university-linked facilities on the shore.

What to See #

  • Picnic Point: Picnic Point - a wooded peninsula that extends into the lake and is managed as a public park with walking trails along the shoreline and views across the water.
  • Memorial Union Terrace: Memorial Union Terrace - a popular lakeside gathering spot adjacent to the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus that offers direct views across the lake.
