Lake Mead National Recreation Area
Park Desert reservoir and recreation area around Hoover Dam
Lake Mead National Recreation Area centers on the Colorado River reservoirs behind Hoover Dam, offering boating, fishing, desert hiking and canyoneering across red-rock shorelines and exposed lakebed geological features.
Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a U.S. National Recreation Area that surrounds reservoirs on the Colorado River - principally Lake Mead and Lake Mohave - straddling southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona. The recreation area was designated in 1964 following the creation of the reservoirs by Hoover Dam.
Primary recreational activities include boating, fishing, swimming, hiking and shoreline camping, with developed marinas, campgrounds and visitor centers near major access points. The area protects shoreline, desert habitat and cultural resources while providing close-in water recreation for the Las Vegas region.
Hoover Dam, completed in 1936, created Lake Mead; the dam and visitor facilities form a focal point for many visitors to the recreation area. Management is by the National Park Service in coordination with other federal and state agencies.
The recreation area stretches along the Colorado River basin adjacent to the Las Vegas metropolitan area, with primary access points near Boulder City and within a roughly 30- to 60-minute drive from Las Vegas depending on the destination within the park.
- Origins: The lakes were formed behind Hoover Dam (completed in 1936) and the recreation area was designated in 1964 to protect shoreline and provide public access.
- Visitor tip: Marinas and boat launches at several developed beaches provide seasonal access for boating and fishing; summer temperatures can be extreme so spring and fall are popular for visits.
What to See #
- Lake Mead: The reservoir created by Hoover Dam on the Colorado River; the lake shoreline includes campgrounds, marinas and boat-launch facilities used for boating and fishing.
- Lake Mohave: A long reservoir downstream of Hoover Dam with developed recreation areas, marinas and shoreline managed for water-based recreation.
- Hoover Dam area: The dam completed during the 1930s that formed the reservoirs and includes a visitor center and interpretive displays; the dam and immediate areas are managed in cooperation with federal agencies.
How to Get to Lake Mead National Recreation Area #
Lake Mead National Recreation Area is best reached by car from the Las Vegas metropolitan area - most popular access points and marinas are about 30-45 minutes (roughly 25-40 miles / 40-65 km) southeast or east of Las Vegas via I‑515/US‑93/US‑95 or via NV‑147 (Lake Mead Parkway) from Henderson. Follow posted signs to specific units such as Boulder Basin, Callville Bay or the Hoover Dam/Visitor Center.
There is limited regular public transit into the park; many visitors use private car, rental vehicle, or guided shuttles/tours from Las Vegas. Walking distances within developed recreation areas (marinas, visitor centers) are short from parking lots.
Tips for Visiting Lake Mead National Recreation Area #
- Plan launches and shoreline access around current lake levels-check the NPS Lake Mead website before you go because ramps and marinas (Boulder Basin, Callville Bay) are affected by water fluctuations.
- Visit weekdays or early mornings in spring/fall to avoid weekend and summer boating crowds; the Boulder Basin/Hoover Dam area is the busiest, while the upper and western coves are far quieter if you can access them.
- If you want quieter scenery and history, explore side canyons and backcountry trails rather than the main boat-in beaches; ranger-led programs and visitor centers (Boulder City/Hoover Dam area) post up-to-date safety and launch information.
