Lake Köyceğiz
Lake Freshwater lake near Mediterranean coast with wetlands
A lagoon lake in Muğla Province connected to the Mediterranean by a narrow channel, Lake Köyceğiz is a base for boat trips to Dalyan, thermal springs, mud baths and nearby İztuzu Beach turtle nesting.
Lake Köyceğiz is a shallow coastal lake in Muğla Province in southwestern Turkey, adjacent to the town of Köyceğiz and linked to the Mediterranean Sea by a short channel to Dalyan. It lies within a protected environmental area that includes marshes, reed beds and coastal dunes.
The lake is used for short boat excursions, birdwatching, fishing and visits to nearby hot springs; many visitors combine a lake boat trip with a visit to İztuzu beach and the ancient ruins of Kaunos. Boats regularly travel the Dalyan channel to the coast, and lakeside facilities support small-scale tourism and local fisheries.
Human use around the lake dates back to antiquity - the Kaunos settlement at the river mouth was an active port in Lycian, Hellenistic and Roman times and the shoreline has remained inhabited through the Ottoman and modern Turkish periods. In recent decades the area has been managed for both tourism and conservation as part of a regional special environmental protection zone.
The lake lies in southwestern Anatolia in Muğla Province, a short drive from the coastal resorts of the southwestern Turkish Aegean-Mediterranean region; the town of Köyceğiz sits on the northeast shore and Dalyan and İztuzu beach lie just to the southwest.
- Boat trips: Boat excursions commonly run between the town, the Dalyan estuary and İztuzu beach; trips take around 30-60 minutes depending on route.
- Turtle nesting: The coastal spit nearby is an important nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles and is part of local conservation measures.
What to See #
- Köyceğiz town: A compact town on the lake's shore that serves as the main gateway for boat trips, local markets and lakeside promenades.
- Dalyan channel: A narrow channel that links the lake to the Mediterranean near the Dalyan estuary and provides the boat route used by daily excursions to the coast.
- İztuzu beach: A long sandy spit on the nearby coast noted for loggerhead turtle nesting and accessible by boat from the Dalyan estuary.
- Sultaniye hot springs: A small lakeside area with thermal springs and mud baths that attract day visitors and local spa users.
- Kaunos ruins: Ruins of an ancient port city at the mouth of the river that have visible Lycian, Hellenistic and Roman remains and are frequently visited on combined lake-and-coast tours.
