Main image

Lake Kilpisjärvi is a lake in far northwestern Finland, in the Enontekiö municipality near the tripoint area with Sweden and Norway. The lake and its surrounding uplands are a focal point for hiking, fishing and high-latitude outdoor activity.

The shoreline hosts the small settlement of Kilpisjärvi, which provides basic services and access for visitors, and trails lead from the lake into nearby fell country. The area is popular for viewing alpine tundra, mountain vistas and seasonal phenomena such as the midnight sun and aurora borealis.

The lake occupies a glacially carved basin and is part of a landscape of fells and ridges that rise toward the Scandinavian mountain chain, with the Halti massif nearby. Its location near international borders makes it a gateway for cross-border trekking.

Geographically it lies in Finland’s extreme northwest at about 69°N, close to the Norway and Sweden borders, with the village of Kilpisjärvi on its shore.

  • High-latitude outdoor access: Sits at high latitude and is a popular starting point for cross-border hikes and viewing the midnight sun in summer and northern lights in winter.

What to See #

  • Halti massif: A highland massif on the Finland-Norway border that rises near the lake and contains Finland's highest natural point, used as a destination for hikers and views over the lake.
