Lake Khanka

Lake Khanka is a large transboundary freshwater lake on the China-Russia border, lying on the plains between Heilongjiang province (China) and Primorsky Krai (Russia). It is an extensive shallow lake with surrounding marshes and reedbeds that form an important wetland complex.

The lake and its shoreline provide broad shallows, reedbeds and marsh habitat that support fisheries and migratory waterbirds; seasonal water-level changes expose mudflats used by birds and local fisheries use shallow areas for nets and traps. Boating and birdwatching are the most common visitor activities where access is available from the Chinese side.

Lake Khanka is a natural lake occupying a low-lying basin; its ecology has long been shaped by seasonal flooding and human use for fishing and reed harvesting. The shoreline and wetlands have been managed and studied at different times by local and regional authorities to support fisheries and conserve bird habitat.

The lake sits on the border region of northeast China and the Russian Far East, roughly centred at the coordinates provided. The landscape around the lake is flat agricultural plain with extensive wetland fringe; the nearest large Chinese administrative region is Heilongjiang province.
