Main image

Lake Karapiro is an artificial reservoir on the Waikato River in New Zealand’s North Island, created by the construction of a hydroelectric dam in the late 1940s. It functions both as part of the hydroelectric scheme on the Waikato River and as a major recreational and sporting lake.

The lake is best known for its internationally recognized rowing facilities, including a measured 2,000 metre straight course that hosts national and international regattas. The shoreline supports boating, fishing and lakeside reserves with access points and picnic areas.

The reservoir was formed when the Karapiro Dam and power station were completed in the late 1940s to generate electricity and regulate river flows. Since then the site has developed specialized infrastructure for rowing and other recreational uses while continuing to supply hydroelectric generation.

Geographically the lake sits on the Waikato River near the town of Cambridge and the city of Hamilton in the Waikato region, accessible by regional roads from those population centres.
