Lake Kaņieris

Lake Kaņieris is a shallow coastal lake in Tukums Municipality in western Latvia and lies within the protected landscape of the Ķemeri area. It is an important wetland in the region.

Reeds and shallow open water dominate the shoreline; the lake area is used for birdwatching and wetland observation, with established observation towers and paths that allow viewing of waterfowl and marsh bird species. The lake is also noted for extensive reedbeds rather than steep shores or deep water.

The lake’s modern form reflects coastal and human-influenced changes to the landscape; it has been managed as part of regional conservation efforts and included in protected-area planning for the Ķemeri coastal wetlands. Management has aimed to preserve habitat for nesting and migrating birds.

Geographically the lake sits on Latvia’s western lowlands near the Ķemeri coastal zone, within Tukums Municipality. It lies on the coastal plain a short distance inland from the Gulf of Riga and is accessible from nearby towns and the Ķemeri protected area.
