Lake Itasca is a small lake in north-central Minnesota located within Itasca State Park and is best known as the primary headwaters of the Mississippi River. The lake and park are focused on outdoor recreation and interpretation of the river’s source.
The most visited feature is the official headwaters site where a stream leaves the lake to become the Mississippi; a boardwalk, marker and short trails let visitors view the beginning of the river and learn about its course. The park also offers trails, camping and canoeing.
The lake was named and identified as the Mississippi’s source in the 19th century by explorer Henry Schoolcraft; the site has been managed as a state park since the early 20th century to protect the headwaters landscape. Recreational and educational use has been the park’s primary purpose since its establishment.
Lake Itasca lies in north-central Minnesota within Itasca State Park, in a forested, glacially formed landscape that is accessible by park roads and lies inland from Minnesota’s larger towns and cities.
