Lake Inawashiro is a large freshwater lake in Fukushima Prefecture on Honshu, Japan. It is one of Japan’s largest lakes by surface area and sits in a volcanic caldera setting.
The lake attracts visitors for boating, fishing, lakeside walks and views of nearby volcanic peaks. The northern shore offers prominent views of Mount Bandai, and the lake’s open water is used for recreation throughout the warmer months.
Formed within a volcanic landscape, the basin and shores have been used for fishing and local settlement for centuries; volcanic activity in the surrounding area shaped the lake’s present basin.
Lake Inawashiro sits in central Fukushima Prefecture, north of the city of Koriyama and southwest of the Bandai volcanic complex. The lake is surrounded by agricultural lowlands and mountain foothills.
- Size rank in Japan: Recognised as one of Japan's largest lakes, ranked fourth by surface area among lakes in the country.
- Mount Bandai views: Offers clear views of Mount Bandai on its northern shore, making it a popular spot for scenic photography.
