Lake Inari is a large freshwater lake in Finnish Lapland, in the municipality of Inari. It is one of Finland’s largest lakes and an important cultural and natural landmark in the region.

The lake features many islands, sheltered bays and long shorelines that support fishing, boating and wilderness recreation; local services in the village of Inari arrange boat trips and fishing trips. It is also a centre for Sámi culture, with museums and community events located nearby.

The area around the lake has been used for fishing and seasonal activities by Sámi people for centuries and remains culturally significant today. Modern tourism developed in the 20th century with recreational fishing and nature-based activities drawing visitors.

Lake Inari lies well above the Arctic Circle in northern Finland’s Lapland region, with the village of Inari on its shore. The lake sits inland from the Barents Sea coast and is surrounded by boreal forest and tundra landscapes.

  • Arctic seasonality: The lake sits above the Arctic Circle and offers midnight sun in summer and frequent northern lights displays in winter, making season important for planning visits.
  • Boating and fishing: More than a thousand islands and many shallow bays create sheltered waterways popular for fishing, boating and canoeing; anglers target trout and whitefish species.

What to See #

  • Inari village: The village of Inari on the lake's northern shore is a cultural centre for Sámi communities and a common base for boat and fishing trips on the lake.
  • Ukonsaari island: Ukonsaari (Ukko's island) is an island on the lake with archaeological and traditional Sámi significance and is visited on guided boat tours.
